Quartet educates, entertains Sussex Academy students
Texas-based string quartet Invoke visited Sussex Academy Jan. 9 to hold an intimate Q&A session with band students before performing a concert for the middle school.
Sponsored by Coastal Concerts and coordinated by Sussex Academy band/performing arts teacher Mike Marotta, the event allowed students the opportunity to learn from – and even perform with – award-winning musicians.
During the Q&A session, students asked questions about musical storytelling, and seventh grade pianist Anna Liang was invited to improv with the multi-instrument quartet.
Following the session, Invoke performed for the middle school, playing original works that mix genres from bluegrass, Appalachia, jazz and minimalism.
During the Q&A, students asked questions and seventh grade pianist Anna Liang was invited to improv with the professional musicians. Gathered are (l-r) Zach Matteson, Nick Montopoli, Anna Liang, Sussex Academy band/performing arts teacher Mike Marotta and Geoff Manyin.
