Sussex Academy Weekly Update
Click on a heading below to expand:
Grades 6-8: On February 22 the middle school will be hosting its annual rewards day to celebrate our awesome students. In order to participate, students must not have received any disciplinary action that resulted in an in-school or out of school suspension for this school year and must have earned school cash to use to purchase an event “ticket” (and permission slip) for the activity of their choice. This year’s choices include: bowling, ice-skating, trampoline park, Escape Room, team sports activities, and painting. Each team will be holding an auction where students will have an opportunity to purchase a spot for an activity, using school cash earned this school year. Students will be bringing home information and a permission slip for the selected activity.
Grades 9-11: If your child is interested in attending any of the service academies (Naval Academy, West Point, Coast Guard, Air Force Academy), I encourage you to check out Senator Carper's Service Academy Night on February 21 from 6-8:00. Applying to an academy is a complicated process, so I encourage you to attend! Call Senator Carper's office at (302) 674-3308 or contact Mrs. Fees if you have questions.
Grades 9-11: SAHS will once more be taking a summer bus trip to visit lots of colleges! An interest meeting will be held for students in grades 9-11 during activity period on March 5. Destinations, cost, and timing will be determined at the meeting. Contact Mrs. Fees with any questions.
Grades 9-12: The 2nd Annual "Seahawk Showcase" will be held on March 1 at 7pm. Come see the wide variety of acts performed by our high school students and staff! $5 tickets will be sold at the door, plus a canned good or personal care item (soap, shampoo, etc.). All proceeds benefit Grass Roots Rescue, a local pet shelter, and the pantry for needy students at Del Tech. Sponsored by SA's National Honor Society chapter. If high school students would like to perform in the show, an application form is due by February 20 to Mr. Marine or Mrs. Fees. A run-through of acts will be on February 21 after school, or students may submit a video.
Grade 9: Each year, the HOBY organization sponsors a local leadership and service workshop just for freshmen. CLeW (Community Leadership Workshop) is a FREE one-day opportunity will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 - 4:30 at Sussex Tech. Everyone who would like to attend is welcome to sign up - students should message their name, email, and phone number to Mrs. Fees no later than February 28. Bring your own lunch; snacks, drinks, guest speakers, and activities are provided. A t-shirt is available for purchase the day of the workshop for $10 (optional).
Grade 9: PSAT 8/9 will be offered to all freshmen on March 27 at Sussex Academy. This test is optional but strongly encouraged since it provides an excellent practice for the SAT college admissions test that will be taken junior year. The cost is $10. More information and registration will be available in mid-February.
Grades 10 - 11: All students who qualify academically for National Honor Society will be hand-delivered letters late next week inviting them to apply. Meeting the academic requirements is only the first step to NHS membership; there is an extensive application also required in order to also demonstrate service, leadership and good character. Completed applications are due no later than March 11 to Mr. Marine or Mrs. Fees.
Grade 10: The PSAT 10 will be given to all sophomores on March 27 at Sussex Academy. This test is required by the State of Delaware, so please do not schedule appointments on this day. Students will be registered by the State; there is no cost to families.
