Middle School

Grade 6:  Grandparents and Grandfriends Day is scheduled for March 1.  Address request forms were emailed to 6th grade families.  If you did not receive a form please email

Grades 6-8:  To add some spice to our holiday season (and mostly to celebrate winter break) Sussex Academy is hosting an Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest. Students in all grades are invited to wear an ugly holiday sweater (purchased or homemade) on Thursday, December 20.  (Bottoms can be uniform bottoms or jeans).  One winner from each grade will take home a gift card!  

Grades 6-8:  Mark your calendar for January 18, 2019.  Our sophomore class will be hosting a build your own salad lunch as their class fundraiser.  More details at a later date.

Grades 6-8:  Once again during 3rd marking period the middle school students will be doing a unit on water safety and swimming. Students will need appropriate an swim suit, a towel and goggles. Students who forget swim suits or towels will be given alternate assignments to work on that deal with swimming and water safety.

Grades 9-12: Winter Formal to benefit the Senior Class Trip.  December 20 from 7 to 10 pm in SA Cafetorium-Attire is black and white theme.  Tickets are $20 per person and will be sold during lunch beginning on December 10.  Outside guest passes are due to Mrs. Messina by December 19.  Tickets will be available at the door for SA students only.

Grades 9-12:  Friday, January 25 will be a high school pajama day to benefit the senior class trip. Students can pay $2 to their homeroom teacher on that date.  Appropriate pajama-related apparel is expected.  

Grades 11-12 Honors Literature: Books for Our Next Unit:  When students return from winter break, they will begin a unit covering philosophical literature. The texts are all translations, and therefore students will be required to use specific editions. Copies of The Metamorphosisby Franz Kafka and excerpts from additional texts will be provided. Students will need to make sure they do not lose these copies, as extras will not be available. Students will need to obtain or print a copy of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, translated by Richard Howard, ISBN-10: 0156012197, ISBN-13: 978-0156012195, pdf available online at  by January 2, 2019. Students will also need to obtain a copy of The Stranger by Albert Camus, translated by Matthew Ward, ISBN-10: 9780679720201, ISBN-13: 978-0679720201 (pdf not available) by February 1, 2019Used copies are welcome, but other editions will not be allowed in class. Grade 12: An update was given to all seniors this week about college and financial aid steps and considerations.  See attached copy of the handout that was distributed during history classes.  Contact Mrs. Fees with any questions ( or 856-3636). senior december update

Grade 12: Due to the popularity of the Senior Yearbook Recognition Ads, we have extended the deadline to purchase an ad for your senior to January 15, 2019. This is a great way to celebrate your senior's success, milestones as well as reflect on the person your senior has become.  Please consider showing your pride and support for our school by purchasing one of these ads.  Visit to create your recognition ad.   Any questions, please contact Ms. Mews, Yearbook Advisor at 302-856-3636.

Grade 12:  Every senior should have received a Delaware Scholarship Compendium, a book with hundreds of scholarships for Delawareans.  Additional copies are available outside of Mrs. Fees' office.  Students may also wish to create accounts with and which are excellent sources for scholarship searches!

Strategic Plan Survey: For those that were unable to attend the Sussex Academy Town Hall meetings, we invite you to participate in our Town Hall Survey.  Please click on the link and submit the survey by 3pm on Friday, December 28, 2018.

Little Women:  The Musical:  7pm on December 14 & 15.  Tickets, available at the door, are $10 per adult and $5 per student/child.

Student vs Staff Basketball Game: This event will be re-scheduled.  New date will be announced soon.

Parent Pick Up:
If picking up a student before 4pm please use main entrance location. If pick up time is after 4pm please use the gymnasium entrance in the back of the school.  PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL STUDENTS NOT PARTICIPATING IN A SUPERVISED AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY MUST BE PICKED UP BY 3:30PM.  ANY STUDENT WAITING FOR PICK UP AFTER 3:30PM IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND AFTER SCHOOL CARE.

Bus/Parent Pick Up Changes:  Please call the main office (302) 856-3636 by 2pm to request a change to your student’s end of the day transportation.


Open Enrollment for Sussex Academy started on November 5, 2018 and will close on January 10, 2019.  Applications must be received by 4PM on January 10, 2019 to be included in the lottery. Applications should be completed online at 

Sibling preference is only granted if a complete application is submitted by 4PM on January 10, 2019 AND the older sibling remains enrolled in the school for the upcoming school year.  If either of these conditions is not met, then the student will not be eligible to attend Sussex Academy. Applications for siblings must include the student essay.

Current 8thgraders wishing to attend Sussex Academy High School do NOT need to complete an application.  A Letter of Intent will be sent home in February.  The signed Letter of Intent will be due on March 15, 2019.

Sports Booster Club

We are about to start production of our winter high school sports programs covering the girls and boys swim teams and the girls and boys basketball teams. If you would like to place a message to your favorite Seahawk athletes, or place a sponsorship ad in the publication, now is the time to do it. The deadline is December 18th. Oh, did we mention all proceeds from the three seasonal programs go to fund year-end scholarships for a couple of our senior student athletes. Stage Band Benefit Concert Video: A professional videographer, Jukebox Entertainment, recorded the Sussex Academy Performing Arts Benefit Concert at DogFish Head on 12/5/18.  The DVD is available at cost for  $20.00.  Orders will be available for Pickup at Sussex Academy before Christmas.  To order DVD(s) please send a check made payable to JUKEBOX ENTERTAINMENT and mail to : Jukebox Entertainment,

SGA Food Drive:  The Student Government Association is sponsoring a food drive.  Non-perishable items and money donations can be made in each homeroom.  Money collected will be used to purchase toys.  The collected food and toys will be donated to the Georgetown Community Action Center. The Food Drive will end on December 17.
