Educator group names Sussex Academy PE teacher Delaware’s best

The Society of Health and Physical Educators Delaware recently named Sussex Academy physical education teacher Stephanie Hartsoe its High School PE Teacher of the Year for 2026.

The annual awards presented by SHAPE Delaware recognize outstanding educators who exemplify excellence in teaching, leadership and advocacy for health and physical education.

Each year, professionals are selected for their commitment to student success, innovative practices and dedication to promoting lifelong wellness.

A 15-year Sussex Academy employee, Hartsoe is equally known for her school spirit – often dressing in wigs and costumes to cheer and motivate students – as her ability to engage reluctant pupils.

“I like to stress to them that it’s not about being a super athlete,” she said. “Everyone can find joy in fitness activities. I like to give students options so they can set their own goals, practice their skills and enjoy what they want to do while still being active.”

It’s all about creating a positive and fun environment, Hartsoe said.

“I love when the kids who started out saying they couldn’t do this or that find something they can do and surprise themselves,” she said. “The joy they get when they’ve impressed themselves is so rewarding.”

Hartsoe is also an assistant coach for the high school swimming teams and middle school cross country teams. In the past, she coached middle school lacrosse and field hockey at Sussex Academy, and designed and directed programs at the Boys & Girls Club in Rehoboth.

She is also likely to throw on a tutu and matching ensemble to run in races that benefit community causes, such as Dewey Goes Pink and the UD Chicken Chase.

“I like to help where I can,” she said.

Hartsoe graduated from Wesley College, where she played field hockey. A certified lifeguard, she works as a pool attendant in the summer.

Dr. Sherry MacBury, Sussex Academy Chief of Student Services, K-12, said Hartsoe exemplifies excellence in health and physical education.

“She not only creates meaningful learning experiences that inspire students to embrace healthy lifestyles, but she also expanded opportunities for students by developing our Swim Fitness course, which takes advantage of Sussex Academy’s unique aquatic facility,” MacBury said.

Through the program, students can also earn CPR, First Aid and Lifeguarding certifications.

“Most importantly, Stephanie meets students where they are, encouraging growth at every fitness level while building positive, lasting relationships,” MacBury said. “Her enthusiasm, school spirit, and commitment to student success are unmatched.”
