Who Can Attend
Interested parents of Delaware students eligible to attend grades 6 though 8 may apply for admission to the Sussex Academy of Arts & Sciences. In order to acquaint the public with the school, we host tours and public information sessions during the fall. This is followed by our application period.

School Tours
Interested parents and students should plan on touring the school on one of the tour dates in the fall. The tours will be held at 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, and 10:30 a.m. on November 14, 15, 16, and 17, 2011. The tours are most suitable for students who will be in grade six the following year and their parents.

Public Information Meetings
Interested parents and students are also invited to learn more about the school and our academic program at one of our public information meetings at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15 or Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the school.

Open Application Period
The school determines the number of anticipated sixth grade openings for the upcoming school year each November. Applications for those positions will be accepted this year beginning on Friday, November 18, 2011. Applications received between that date and Friday, January 6, 2012 will have priority consideration for admission. As completed applications are received by the school, they are assigned an application number which is provided to the parents/guardians and used for the lottery process. Incomplete applications or applications from ineligible students will not be accepted. Please note that applications received prior to November 18, 2011 will also be returned and those that are received after January 6, 2012 will be placed at the end of the waiting list.

Lottery
Complete applications received for anticipated sixth grade openings during the Open Application Period are recorded into our database, assigned application numbers, and then sealed in unmarked envelopes and placed in a box. If more applications are received during the Open Application Period than there are anticipated openings, then a lottery is held to select the students that will be invited to enroll for the upcoming school year. During the lottery, each application received during the Open Application Period is randomly drawn from the box, the application number is announced, and it is assigned a lottery number based on the order in which it is selected. Students are admitted to the school in the order that their application is selected from the box.

If a lottery is required for the 2012-13 school year, then the proceedings will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the school’s media center. The lottery results will be posted on our website and letters will be mailed to all applicants providing enrollment details to the successful candidates and waiting list information to those who are not selected. Applicants are encouraged to attend the lottery, as it is an open, public proceeding.

Enrollment Period
Immediately following the lottery, all applicants are contacted and informed of their status. The applicants that were assigned numbers during the lottery proceedings that are within the number of anticipated openings are invited and given instructions on how to enroll. The enrollment period for the 2011-12 school year begins on January 17, 2012 and ends March 9. The applicants whose numbers are above the anticipated openings allotment are placed on a waiting list based on their lottery numbers.

Preference
Some applicants are given preference during the Open Application Period and are not subject to the lottery. Applicants who have an older sibling who will be concurrently attending the Sussex Academy and those that are children of either staff members or Founding Board members are automatically offered a position provided that their applications are received during the Open Application Period.
