Sussex Academy students support former classmate’s family

By planning a lunchtime fundraiser and soliciting donations from area businesses and families, Sussex Academy students raised more than $2,000 to support the family of a graduate who passed away from cancer two months ago.

Students in Sussex Academy’s Scrub Club and Leo Club collaborated on a “Chips for Charity” fundraiser during all lunches Nov. 7 to raise money to help offset funeral expenses for the family of 2024 alum Tanya Garcia Roblero.

The Goodhue and Green families provided donations and volunteered at the event. Restaurants Crooked Hammock, Redner’s and Sol Azteca provided chips, guacamole, salsa and cheeses so that all proceeds could go directly to the family, rather than cover any associated costs.

Students, families and the local community were all very generous in supporting the fundraiser, said teacher Meaghan Tyndall.

“One of our core values at Sussex Academy is allowing students to ‘develop social consciousness through service and community partnerships,’” Tyndall said. The Scrub Club and the Leo Club have worked incredibly hard on this event.”
