Sussex Academy student-athletes feted at all-sports banquet
Student-athletes who excelled in competition throughout the 2025-26 academic year were honored at the Sussex Academy All Sports Banquet June 4.
Taking place on the turf of Seahawk Stadium, the award ceremony recognized team MVPs, all-conference and all-state athletes, outstanding grade-level players, coach-voted category honors and as both four-year and five-year academic letter and varsity letter athletes.
The Sussex Academy Sports Boosters presented scholarships to Ryan Lowe and Ben Steimel, and coaches presented Most Valuable Player Awards to their deserving student-athletes.
Fall season MVP awards were presented to George Sapna, boys soccer; Grayce Glover, girls volleyball; Ryan Lowe, field hockey; Ryan Moody, boys cross country; and Riley Moriarty, girls cross country.
Winter season MVP awards were presented to Irwin Sickler, boys basketball; Grayce Glover, girls basketball; Ryan Moody, boys indoor track; Katya Geyer, girls indoor track; Christian Wright, boys swimming; Victoria Evans, girls swimming; William Hendershot, wrestling; and Caitlin Redick, cheerleading.
Spring season MVP awards were presented to Victor Goodhue, baseball; Jordan Green, golf; Jack “Taco” Meszaros, boys lacrosse, Elizabeth Merrick, girls lacrosse; Caroline White, softball; Kieran Probert, boys tennis; Karina Lopez, girls tennis; Jesse Jean-Louis, boys track & field; Katya Geyer, girls track & field; Mack Lawson, boys volleyball; and Debora Williams, girls soccer.
Awards were presented to outstanding underclassmen athletes, including eighth graders Nolan Furlong, cross country, swimming, indoor track, tennis and outdoor track; Seth Moore, cross country, indoor track and outdoor track; and Garrity Cox, indoor track, soccer and outdoor track.
Ninth grade outstanding athletes are Patricia Lara-Nieto, volleyball, basketball and soccer; Jordan Blades, cross country, indoor track and soccer; and Charles Bowman, wrestling and tennis.
Tenth grade outstanding athletes are Benjamin Moody, cross country, basketball and outdoor track; Taegan Forester, cross country, indoor track and softball; and Mason Glover, basketball and baseball.
Eleventh grade outstanding athletes are Jovan Jean-Louis, soccer and volleyball; Grayce Glover, volleyball, basketball and softball; Anna Mumford, swimming; and Michael Whitaker, swimming and lacrosse.
Coaches voted on a number of awards presented to students.
The Scholar Athlete Award is based on the athletes’ GPAs and the number of varsity letters earned throughout their careers. This year’s recipients are Katya Geyer, who achieved a 4.93 GPA while earning 15 varsity letters in cross country, indoor track, and track & field; and Ryan Moody, who achieved a 4.70 GPA while earning 12 varsity letters in cross country, indoor track, and track & field.
The Sportsmanship Award goes to the athlete who has displayed a commendable level of sportsmanship and has a record of showing leadership in fair play on the field, in school and at practice. This year’s recipients are Rocco Buonopane, cross country, indoor track, and track & field; and Kacie Rawlings, field hockey and lacrosse.
The Spirit Award is presented to a male and female athlete who have shown consistently strong support for all teams including their own. This year’s recipients are Spencer Nagy, cross country, indoor track, and track & field; and Brooklyn Montgomery, volleyball and lacrosse.
The Seahawk Coaches Award recognizes a team member who made contributions beyond their talent as a player and who have had a major impact on the success of the entire team, making them difficult to replace. This year’s recipients are Kieran Probert, cross country, swimming and tennis; and Grayce Glover, volleyball, basketball and softball.
The Most Outstanding Athlete Award goes to the senior male and female considered to be the best overall athletes at Sussex Academy. This year’s recipients are Katya Geyer, cross country, indoor track, and track & field; and Ryan Moody, cross country, indoor track; and track & field.
Coaches also voted to name Jay Diaz the Sussex Academy Coach of the Year. Diaz has coached cross country, indoor track, and track & field for 8 years, resulting in 4 state championships in differing events.
