Sussex Academy inducts Computer Science Honor Society members

Sussex Academy inducted six new members of the Computer Science Honor Society in an intimate ceremony April 16.

Students Mia Clarisse Benito, Armaan Chadha, Katya Geyer, Burton Hagen, Logan Mattie and Elizabeth Merrick were sworn into the chapter, now in its second year. The chapter is led by President Alec Dukes, Vice President Eva Navitskaya, and Treasurer/Reporter Jack Thomas.

The Computer Science Honors Society is a program of the Computer Science Teachers Association and has over 200 active local chapters, said society advisor and STEM and science teacher Tim Elmer.

“The purpose of this organization is to encourage students’ enthusiasm for computer science, to honor academic excellence and to promote service,” Elmer said.

Students will be promoting computer science at the Sussex Academy Elementary Family Science & Math Night April 30.

“They have designed an interactive robotics experience that allows the elementary students to modify code and operate several VEX robots,” Elmer said.

The organization embodies three core values, Elmer said. Any student has the potential to enroll, to grow and to excel in computing. The society empowers members to become ambassadors of the computer science discipline, and fosters a commitment to promoting outstanding scholarship in computer science coursework.

To be eligible for membership, students must have attended Sussex Academy for at least one semester, must have completed at least one semester of an AP computer science course with a minimum grade of 80, must have at least an 80 average in all AP computer science classes, and must not have received any disciplinary consequences in the past school year.

Computer Science Honor Society members are required to submit evidence of school or community service each year and to attend society meetings during the school year.
