Sussex Academy Elementary performs Seussical Jr.
More than 60 Sussex Academy Elementary students performed in the school musical “Seussical Jr.” April 24-25.
Seussical Jr. weaves together Dr. Seuss’s most famous stories, primarily Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches the Egg.
The show highlights the power of friendship and loyalty as Horton, played by Abby Greenberg, protects the Whos and Gertrude McFuzz, performed by Sayuri Perez Perez, struggles to catch his attention.
The cast was augmented by The Cat in the Hat, played by Irene Guevera Yoc; Mayzie LaBird, played by Evie Crisci; and JoJo, played by Kennedi Jones; under the lead of performing arts teacher Christopher Decker.
Pulling off the performance was not an easy task, Decker said, noting the show is technically a middle school production.
“The sheer energy required to bring Dr. Seuss’s world to life is immense and yet these kids worked tirelessly and nailed it!” Decker said. “Watching this show come together was a beautiful reminder of what happens when a community leans in. This support allowed our students to find their voices, build their confidence and create memories that will last far longer than the final curtain call.”
Dean of Elementary Connie Hendricks said she was beyond proud of the student performance and Decker’s leadership.
“Our elementary cast did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life!” Hendricks said. “This production was a true community effort, and I want to extend a sincere thank you to the high school students for their mentorship, and our parents for their time and resources. Most of all, to Mr. Decker for his incredible direction and unwavering dedication. Thank you all for making this such a magical experience for our school community.”
