Sussex Academy celebrates back-to-back state soccer championships

Sussex Academy’s entire secondary campus united Nov. 20 to celebrate the school’s second straight DIAA Division II State Soccer Championship with a pep rally and athlete v. staff game. After clinching the Henlopen South division crown and the Henlopen championship, the #1 seeded Seahawks defeated #11 St. Andrew’s Nov.16 in penalty kicks after regulation and overtime ended in a 1-1 draw. Sussex Academy Coach RJ Dina said the accomplishment is especially significant as it is the first back-to-back soccer championship in all divisions for a public school in 45 years since Brandywine in 1979-80. Students and staff crowded the stands at Seahawk stadium to cheer captains C.J. Norton and Andres Romero-Nieto, Coach RJ Dina and the entire championship team. Then, athletes enjoyed one more game on the pitch as they took on the staff in a friendly but competitive match. In the end, the young booters came away victorious in a 2-0 decision.
