Fall Return-to-School Cohort Information
August 27, 2020
Parents and guardians,
Thank you for submitting your responses to our ‘Fall Return to School Survey’. Based upon the survey information, a large majority of our families (80%) selected for their child to return to school in a hybrid model which would include both in-person and online instruction. Using the guidance from both the CDC and the Department of Public Health and also using the statewide recommendations from the Delaware Department of Education, our school buildings and school buses cannot take on this volume of students (greater than 900 students) all at one time; therefore, Sussex Academy will begin the 2020-2021 school year in a hybrid model which will include two separate cohorts:
Cohort 1 (A – L) – Students whose last name begin with the letters A thru L will attend school for in-person instruction on Mondays and Tuesday and will receive remote instruction Thursdays and Fridays.
Cohort 2 (M – Z) – Students whose last name begins with the letters M thru Z will receive remote instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays and will attend school for in-person instruction on Thursdays and Fridays.
NOTE: Any students in grades 8-12 who participate in the Academic Challenge Program and their siblings will be in Cohort 2 regardless of the first letter of their last name.
Instruction will not take place on Wednesdays except on weeks shortened by scheduled holidays. Staff will utilize their time on non-instructional days participating in professional development and maintaining scheduled office hours. A school calendar and other information for the 2020-21 school year will be sent out to families at the beginning of next week.
Accommodations have been made, where possible, for previously made requests. Parents with specific questions and/or concerns related to our Cohorts or the reopening plan should email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We had hoped to deliver in-person instruction five days each week for all students, but current conditions prevent us from returning to a regular school schedule. Multiple factors had an impact on our decision, but we are confident that our plan to begin the school year will allow for high-level instruction and an academic experience consistent with the high standards for which Sussex Academy is known.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Sussex Academy.
