County Council honors soccer state champion Sussex Academy

Sussex Academy’s state championship soccer team was honored with a proclamation from County Council Dec. 17.

After clinching the Henlopen South division crown and the Henlopen championship, the #1 seeded Sussex Academy Seahawks defeated #11 St. Andrews Nov. 16 to clinch its second straight DIAA Division II State Championship.

Sussex Academy’s repeat win makes it the first public school to earn back-to-back soccer championships in all soccer divisions since Brandywine took the honors in 1979-80.

Athletic Director and Head Coach RJ Dina said this extraordinary group of young men has achieved something truly remarkable.

“Their relentless dedication and effort have propelled them to the pinnacle of success,” Dina said. “Last year’s triumph felt like a dream fulfilled; to repeat it this year is beyond anything we could have envisioned.”

Dina said he was immensely proud of all his athletes have accomplished – winning six trophies in two years, excelling in the classroom and maturing into outstanding individuals.

“They have set a new benchmark for boys’ soccer and athletics at Sussex Academy,” Dina said. “Words cannot express my gratitude for the privilege of being part of their journey.”
